From Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition - North Shore
The following list outlines projects deemed important for the objectives of the NS-VACC. It is not in any order of priority. Status could be one of Open, Active, Resolved, Abandoned.
Current Projects
North Shore Cycling Map
Project Description: We need a pocket-sized cycling map that shows sufficient detail for cyclists to find their way around the North Shore (such as the credit card-sized folding map that the City of Vancouver publishes every year). We also need a reliable online bike trip planning tool (such as biking directions on Google Maps).
Project Details: The VACC North Shore received a $14,026 grant from Mountain Equipment Co-op to design and print a North Shore bike map. The map will not only show the designated bike routes and greenways, but also routes recommended by local North Shore cyclists. We are planning to print the map with Z-CARD in Ontario, credit card size with 12x3 panels. There will also be a pdf version of the map available online.
The MEC grant application was supported by all three municipalities. The Mayor and Council of the City of North Vancouver passed a resolution on February 28, 2011, supporting the bike map initiative and providing additional funds for the map from revenue generated by the City’s bike rack advertising program. The Districts of North Vancouver and West Vancouver provided letters of support and made staff available to help develop the map. On completion of this project, the map file will be given to the municipalities for future cycling network updates and print runs.
While not part of the project funded by MEC, we need to work on getting all the routes into Google Maps once the print map is completed.
Status: Active. We have contracted a graphic designer who is working with us and staff from the three municipalities. We expect the map to be printed and ready for distribution through community centres and bike shops by May 2012.
Village Bike Loop in West Vancouver
Project Description: The following is a map of the proposed Village Bike Loop in West Vancouver which connects five schools, five parks and all municipal facilities in the vicinity of Ambleside and Dundarave and also connects to the Spirit Trail, the bike route on Highway 1/99 and the existing marked east-west bikeway through West Vancouver:
Status: Proposed to West Vancouver Council, proposal covered in local media
Improve signage
Project Description: More signage to improve way-finding for cyclists: signs with bike route names, signs to destinations and connecting bike routes, consistent signage throughout the North Shore.
Discussion: Improve Signage
Status: Active. NS-VACC has provided input in way-finding signage near Lions Gate bridge in West Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver.
Bike Master Plans for the North Shore
Project Description: Each municipality has a Bicycle Master Plan in some form. Works in progress and periodic updates provide the opportunity to incorporate a number of critical and urgent changes and additions. Standard recommendations for wording to include from VACC North Shore Committee will assist Councils to accept these, adopt them formally and enable staff to implement them. As part of this work, maps and reviews of officially designated North Shore bicycle routes are located here.
Discussion: Bike Master Plans for the North Shore
Status: Active. Participated in North Vancouver Bike Master Plan 2011 review.
Official Community Plans and Transportation Plans for North Shore municipalities
Description of Issue: Each of the 3 North Shore municipalities has an Official Community Plan (OCP) in some form. Works in progress and periodic updates need to incorporate a greater focus on cycling into infrastructure development of communities rather than just the roading network. Standard recommendations for wording to include from VACC North Shore Committee will assist Councils to accept this.
Discussion: Official Community Plans for North Shore municipalities
Status: Active. VACC submitted input for District of North Vancouver OCP. City of North Vancouver OCP review in progress.
Hierarchy of cycle route constructs and markings
Project Description: Cycle route constructs and markings are ranked by degree of safety for cyclists making purposeful trips on the North Shore. Note that all are considered an improvement over no constructs or markings for cyclists.
Discussion: Draft document of rankings (updated on 10 December 2010)
Status: Active. The 1st draft of the document was discussed at the monthly NS-VACC meeting on 2 December 2010 and there were no suggested changes.
Tracking planning and developments
Project Description: We need to keep on top of any new planning and developments to make sure bicycling infrastructure is considered.
Discussion: Tracking Planning and Developments
Status: Active.
Green Single-file Shared Lanes
Project Description: Green asphalt on single-file shared lanes is an easy solution where lanes on arterial roads are not wide enough for bike lanes or side by side sharing. The green colour is much more effective in alerting drivers to cyclists on the road than painting only sharrows without the green asphalt.
Discussion: Green Single-file Shared Lanes
Status: Active. NS-VACC has suggested green single-file shared lanes for Marine Drive in West Vancouver.

Project Description: It's great to have paths, lanes and signals for getting around, but we also need to think about policy regarding the destinations such as lockers, shower facilities, bike racks, secure bike rooms, etc
